Need something to do with the family for this Memorial Day weekend? Go see Epic with the kids! The movie Epic, is becoming epic for the weekend must see’s! The movie is based on a book called “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs,” written by William Joyce. It may not actually be an epic movie but “Epic” scored pretty high among the children! As long as you parents don’t take the story line seriously…at all, you will be alright…if you can make it through the first 30 minutes.

Epic

The “all-star” cast is a bit of a turn off for most adults given that it’s hard to hear the voices of, Amanda Seyfried, Pitbull, Steven Tyler, Beyonce, Colin Farrell, and Christopher Waltz and imagine the characters as those characters and not the real people. Although Colin Farrel does well as “Leafman,” a leader to the miniature army that is there to protect the forest from evil. Christoph Waltz plays Mandrake who wants all things nature to die. I think most adults will agree that these voices are more distracting rather than fitting. After the first 30 minutes, the silly voice parts of random actors ends and Amanda Seyfried comes in as lead character, Mary Katharine and her scientist dad (Jason Sudeikis) are struggling with the qwarky father’s idea/discovery that tiny forest people may exist. Mary’s mother has recently died, which also makes thing a bit more strained.

Mary Katharine (Amanda Seyfried) gets sucked into this miniature life of little forest people while dealing with the death of her mother and aims to help save the forest. The animation/3D efforts are okay during action scenes. The comedy is a bit flat but it’s not the worst children’s movie to come out, so if you enjoy slightly touching, high-fantasy movies, then you won’t be completely upset while the kids enjoy themselves.

Storybrooke Bio

Having been in a coma for as long as anyone can remember, David Nolan awoke with no name and no identity. Seemingly stirred to life by Mary Margaret reading him a story out of Henry’s Fairy Tale book, David was found wandering the woods. Upon being returned to the hospital, he was reintroduced to his wife, Kathryn, whom he had been estranged from just before his disappearance. He and Kathryn have been trying to work out the problems in their marriage, but David can’t help but feel drawn to Mary Margaret.

Storybrooke Bio

Almost every small town has a wealthy resident whose influence seems to know no limit. In Storybrooke, that guy is Mr. Gold. From real estate to politics and even into the personal lives of his neighbors, Gold’s knowledge and involvement is virtually infinite. In fact, he’s got his hands in so many goings-on about town that it’s downright creepy. According to the local Innkeeper, Gold “owns the town”. A number of the citizens of Storybrooke actually appear to be more intimidated by him than they are by Regina.

Gold also owns and operates the local pawnshop, where he spends most of his days curating the various items he has collected over the years and making deals with the townsfolk. Always cool and attired with a cosmopolitan sartorial flair, Mr. Gold exudes the kind of confidence that only comes from knowing you are the master of your domain. But how much does he know?

Storybrooke Bio

Regina is the mayor of Storybrooke and Henry’s adoptive mother—responsibilities she has been balancing, without help, since she adopted Henry as a newborn. Despite the demands of her job, Regina is an extremely attentive mother to Henry. At times, though, she can be a bit overbearing. This is especially true whenever she crosses paths with Emma, Henry’s birthmother, with whom she makes no effort to play nice.

Upon Emma’s arrival in Storybrooke, Regina senses the very real threat she presents to her relationship with Henry and immediately takes action to run Emma out of town. Nothing is too drastic for Regina, who seems able to mobilize the entire population of Storybrooke to hassle Emma during her stay.

Regina endeavors to project a calm, cool and collected appearance, but there is a dark, tempestuous side to her that lies just beneath her Stepford-manicured surface. Barely. Perhaps that’s because, in Fairy Tale Land, she is actually the Evil Queen

“‘Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most wicked character to play of all?’… It’s always been a dream to portray archetypal villains!
Mary Margaret Blanchard

Mary Margaret Blanchard of the cast of Once Upon A Time is really well played by actress Ginnifer Goodwin. Mary Margaret aka Snow White is one of the main characters and protagonists in the storyline and does a great job of furthering the land of Storybrooke. She is often times in cahoots with Emma Swan and Henry Mills to defeat Regina Mills (The Evil Queen).

Fairytale Bio

In Fairy Tale Land she’s Snow White, the fairest of them all. Lips red as rose, hair black as coal, and skin as white as snow. Awakened from the Queen’s sleeping death by her Prince Charming, Snow is on her way to happily ever after when the Queen crashes her wedding and vows that she will yet enact her revenge on the couple. Not one to roll over without a fight, Snow stands up to the Queen and challenges her power. Strong, competent, and self-assured, our Snow White is a far cry from the demure damsel we might imagine.

However, once Snow becomes pregnant, her anxiety about the Queen’s threat prompts her to seek knowledge of the future from the only person who can see it…Rumplestiltskin. He makes a deal with Snow: information about the Queen’s plans for the name of Snow’s unborn daughter.

He tells Snow & Charming that the Queen created a powerful curse, one that will send everyone from Fairy Tale Land to a place where they will be deprived of their happy endings. But, Rumplestiltskin counsels, there is hope. If Snow & Charming can keep their unborn daughter safe from the curse then, in 28 years, she will return to them and they will be able to undo the Queen’s curse. Snow White honors her deal and gives Rumplestiltskin the name: Emma. But at what future cost?

Ginnifer Goodwin on playing Snow White:

“Snow White knows how to *play* the good girl. She lives for love and she only appreciates that which she earns, which makes her an adventuress, a risk-taker, a rule-breaker, and a mischief-maker. She is keenly aware that she battles vanity and jealousy, just as her evil stepmother does. Childhood guilt drives her to try harder and to constantly strive to become a better person, but she also carries with her a princess’ sense of entitlement. and while that is something she is unable to see from within her frame of reference, she does have enough perspective to recognize that her self-reliance separates her from the other fairytale princesses. Playing Snow White, flaws and all, feels less like acting and more like getting to step into the shoes of someone I would like to be.”

Gallery:

Storybrooke Bio (Source: ABC)

Emma Swan is a 28 year-old bail bondswoman from Boston who is strong and self-reliant, though still somehow not quite at home in her own skin. Abandoned at birth, Emma grew up in the foster care system. She has learned to rely only on herself, never letting anyone else get close enough to let her down. She takes a special pleasure in out-maneuvering skips on the job, and seems to prefer hauling them in by their ears.

When Emma was 18 years old she got pregnant and, knowing she was in no position to raise a child and wanting to give him the best chance possible, decided to give him up for adoption. But when Henry, her now 10 year-old biological son, runs away from home and hunts her down in Boston, Emma agrees to drive him back home to Storybrooke, Maine.

During the ride, Henry tells her a seemingly outrageous story: everyone in Storybrooke is a fairy tale character trapped in time by the Evil Queen with no memory of who they truly are. He believes Emma is the long-lost daughter of Snow White & Prince Charming and that it is her destiny to free the enchanted inhabitants of Storybrooke.

Of course, Emma doesn’t buy it. She’s a skeptic with an uncanny knack—call it a “superpower”—for knowing when people are lying. But, man, Henry sure does seem to believe what he’s saying. When Emma returns Henry to Regina, Regina tells Emma it’s time for her to leave town and stay out of Henry’s life. Emma knows she doesn’t quite belong in Storybrooke, but something about Regina raises her hackles… and from the moment she decides to stay, strange and mysterious things begin to happen.

Jennifer Morrison on playing Emma Swan:

“Emma Swan is a deeply damaged woman, and a deeply conflicted woman. She is a survivor, and used to being a loner, and therefore a sucker for the underdog. Against her better judgement, she will compromise herself to fight for what is right and to help those in need. She is strong and aggressive, but her brokenness and her emotions are not buried far beneath her tough exterior. He first reaction to most things is anger, but she has spent her life trying to manage her temper. She is both rash and calculated, and is forced to deal with her instincts to protect her child, a child she believes she is not capable of mothering. In the simplest form, Emma is a list of contrasting qualities: She is hard and soft; she is intense and easy going; she is strong and vulnerable; she is safe and dangerous; she is logical and impulsive. It is exciting to play a character that is so deeply conflicted and fiercely compelled to fight for what she believes is right.”

Henry Mills

Henry Mills, who is played by actor Jared Gilmore is an energetic and monumental force in Once Upon A Time and Storybrooke. In the show Henry is the biological son of Emma Swan and the adoptive son of Regina Mills (The Evil Queen). He is also the main character that fights for the reputation and validity of the infamous ‘Fairy Tale Book’ that is the crux of many episodes of the show. Ultimately Henry Mills along side Emma Swan, Mary Margaret Blanchard and David Nolan are all fighting on the ‘good team’ to defeat evil.

Storybrooke Bio (Source: ABC)

Henry is a precocious 10 year-old boy who believes the inhabitants of Storybrooke are characters from his fairy tale book trapped in the real world by the Evil Queen’s curse. Turns out, he also believes that his adoptive mother Regina is actually that same Evil Queen. Given-up for adoption at birth, Henry has no idea who his biological parents are until, in an effort to break the curse, he tracks down his birth mother, Emma, in Boston and brings her back to Storybrooke, explaining that she is their only hope to restore things to the way they were.

Imaginative and strong-willed, he is prone to ignoring the counsel of the grownups around him. Despite Emma’s skepticism, Henry’s belief in the curse is unwavering. Although he can be a bit stubborn, Henry truly is warm and considerate. He doesn’t want Emma to feel guilty about having given him up for adoption—he knows that she wanted him to have a better life than she had growing up—but now he’s asking her to stay.

Jared Gilmore on playing Henry:

“I feel that Henry’s innocent imagination is the ‘key’ that unlocks the door between the two worlds. Reality and Fairytale. The book is just a another story to anyone else who reads it, but Henry believes it.

I relate to Henry because I’m 11 and also have a very good imagination. I enjoy making up and playing games in worlds with alternate realities myself.”
