In the first time at the Barclay Center, the MTV Video Music Awards was a night to remember with it’s wild performances and even more stranger award winners. From Lady Gaga opening the show to Katy Perry ending it with a bang, the whole evening had viewers like WTF?!
Performances overpowered the actual award part of the show with about 10 moonment actually given out during the two and a half award show. While Miley Cyrus was expected to take home a moonman for her hit “We Can’t Stop”, the singer went home empty handed …well, sorta. *Flashes back to Miley groping Robin Thicke* Justin Timberlake took the biggest awards of the evening with Video of the Year for his single “Mirrors”. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took the moonman for Best Hip Hop Video for “Can’t Hold Us”, beating out Drake, A$AP Rocky, J. Cole and even Kendrick Lamar.
The top performance went to Justin Timberlake who had a 15 minute tribute of his hits throughout the years. Timberlake took us on a ride through his career by performing fan favorites such as “Cry Me a River”, “Suit and Tie”, “Like I Love You” and more. He even reunited with former boy band members of Nsync for a redemption of “Bye Bye Bye and “Girlfriend”. During his speech for the award of Michael Jackson’s Video Vanguard award, JT thanked his former bandmates, even saying he wanted to “share the award” but it will stay at his house. Where was Jessica Biel though?
The night ended with a finale by Katy Perry, who performed her latest single “Roar” for the first time.
