Actress Halle Berry and music icon Chaka Khan are among the honorees honored at the 2013 BET Honors. The BET Network announced on Thursday that basketball star Lisa Leslie, music executive Clarance Avant and religious leader T.D. Jakes will be join Berry and Chan as honorees at the January 12th event held in Washington at the Warner Theater.
Halle Berry is the first African American woman to receive an Oscar for best actress for her role in Monster’s Ball. The actress has played in many prominent roles to become a staple in the industry. Chaka Chan, known as the “Queen of Funk Soul” is a 10 time Grammy award winning musician who has been the influence for many in the music industry today.
The special, which will air on February 11, highlights African Americans performing at top levels in the areas of music, literature, entertainment, education and more. This year, the organization celebrated the likes of writer Maya Angelou, who was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Actress Gabrielle Union will host the upcoming special. Performers for the special event will be announced at a later date.
