Disney has announced the official release dates for “Pirates of the Caribbean 5”, “The Muppets 2”, Brad Bird’s secret movie, and Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent”.
Johnny Depp will return for the fifth film in the billion-dollar franchise set for release on July 10, 2015. “Catch Me If You Can” writer, Jeff Nathanson, will write the screenplay, but no director has been officially attached to the film. The fourth film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” grossed $1.04 billion upon its release in 2011, including $800 million worldwide.
“Muppets 2” is set for official release on March 21, 2014. Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell will star in the film opposite the muppets,while negotiations are being made for Tina Fey to star as the female lead. Brad Bird’s secret science fiction film, “1952”, will be released on December 19, 2014. The film is co-written by “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof, and is rumored to star George Clooney in the lead role. The movie’s plot has been kept under tight wraps. Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent” is a revisionist fairytale that has been pushed from it’s original release of March 14, 2014 to July 2, 2014. The film revolves around the beloved villain from Sleeping Beauty.
Disney also announced that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, opening in theaters on April 14, 2014, and “Guardians of the Galaxy”, which opens on August 1, 2014, will both be released in 3D.
