Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the film “Menace II Society”, Tyrin Turner and Larenz Tate speak with MTV’s RapFix on the history of the film and how Tupac was almost a part of it.

The classic film about life in the hood of South Central Los Angeles starred Tyrin Turner and Larenz Tate, who played Caine and O-Dog respectively. Other co-stars included  Samuel L. Jackson, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Clifton Powell. Each who went on to have thriving movie careers. Tupac was also originally a part of the cast as Sharif. The character was a good kid headed to college, but was confined to the barriers within South Central Los Angeles. Tupac dropped out of “Menace II Society” after a heavy debate with the director Allen Hughes.

Tyrin Turner recalls the incident while on RapFix. “We are at a table reading, and Tupac’s just annoyed. We’re trying to read and he’s just annoyed,” said the actor. “The director and him had words and Tupac was no longer a part of it.” Tupac onced revealed on “Yo!MTV Raps” that he and his entourage beat up the director, yet, Turner states that it was not true.

Director Allen Hughes still speaks positively towards the rapper, stating that Tupac would have been too big for the role in “Menace II Society” and would have “outshined everyone”.
