Jennifer Hudson is getting back to her acting chops. The Former Dream Girls star, in which she won an Oscar, is taking on a few new roles, including a drug addict.

We’re all use to seeing the former American Idol contestant in musicals and broadway performances. Hudson is currently starring in the NBC series ‘Smash”, playing a headliner Roxy who steals the show.

Jennifer Hudson will star in the Alicia Keys produced indie drama “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete”, where the star takes on her most challenging role. She plays  a drug addict in the film that will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this month. “If you’re going to go for it, you go for it,” she said. “It was so interesting because I was completely introduced to a world I didn’t know.” Hudson met with real-life addicts to prepare for the role, as well as hiring a young women as an on-set consultant.

“Inevitable” director George Tillman, Jr. was highly impressed with Hudson’s performance. “She came on set with the tattoos and the rocker hair and I thought, ‘She’s really dedicated,” said Tillman. “She really went for it. It was about the movie. She said, ‘I don’t care what people think. I want to play this right’. She was fearless.”

The actress hopes the film will allow her to take on more challenging roles in the future. “This industry will but you in a box. ‘Jennifer, sing! Do a musical!’ It’s like, no! There’s so much more I want to do and there’s much more I feel like I could do.”
