Just hours after reality TV star Kim Kardashian tweeted raves about Bahrain, riots broke out in the city. Police had to fire tear gas to disperse more than 50 hardline Islamic protesters denouncing her presence in the Gulf kingdom.
The incident took place right before Kardashian opened the doors to the Bahrain branch of her Millions of Milkshakes shop.
Protesters chanted “God is great” near the shopping complex in Riffa, in which the shop was to open. Demonstrators held banners pronouncing the Bahraini traditions and customs did not permit visitors who have appeared in ‘porn movies’. The demonstrators were cleared out before Kardashian made an appearance on Saturday.
Despite the conflict, Kim Kardashian’s presence was supported by many Bahrainis who greeted the star with enthusiasm outside the milkshake shop.
Kim Kardashian had tweeted only hours before her amazement on Bahrain, calling it “the prettiest place on earth.” The tweet was retweeted by Bahrain’s foreign minister.
