Katy Perry went to space — and somehow crash-landed back into public hate.

Like… how did we get here? One minute she’s posing in a blue jumpsuit for Blue Origin’s “girlboss in the galaxy” spaceflight, and the next, the internet’s treating her like she launched herself into irrelevance. Again.

Let’s break down what the hell is going on.

From Stargirl to Space Clown?

So Katy Perry was part of Blue Origin’s latest “all-women” space tourism stunt — alongside Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez (Jeff Bezos’ fiancée), and a few others. And instead of everyone going, “Wow, women in space!” people were like, “Is this feminism… or a PR fever dream?”

Katy was extra. Screaming, filming everything, waving like she was on a parade float in zero gravity. She even did a whole pre-launch glam moment. And the vibe online was: girl what are you doing.

Performative Feminism = Activated

Let’s be real — this wasn’t a NASA mission. This was a billionaire-funded 10-minute sky cruise designed to sell the idea that rich women doing rich people things somehow counts as empowering.

Online spaces instantly clocked it. TikTok, Reddit, and X (Twitter if you’re over 35) were flooded with takes like:

“This isn’t feminism, it’s influencer space cosplay.”

“Using women’s empowerment to sell luxury space rides is wild.”

“Why is Katy Perry screaming like she just met a Minion?”

Katy, unfortunately, became the face of it all. Because she’s the loudest. And people have not forgotten her past PR fumbles.

People Haven’t Really Forgiven Her

Katy’s had a weird decade. That whole “woke pop phase” flopped. “Swish Swish” was a meme. She hosted American Idol, dropped an NFT, tried a Vegas residency… and now, she’s shouting in a spaceship.

She keeps reinventing herself in ways that feel more like market tests than personal growth. So when she does something loud — like this — the backlash is extra sharp. It feels like she’s trying too hard to be relevant again, and people can smell it.

Fame Fatigue Is Real

We’re in an era where people hate try-hard celebrity branding. We want lowkey, unbothered, mysterious queens. Not pop stars yelling in space like it’s 2010 again.

Even fans were like, “girl pls,” while casuals rolled their eyes and scrolled past her zero-gravity TikToks.

And in the middle of all this, Blue Origin’s whole “empowerment” narrative just felt… forced. Like a Hallmark card wrapped around a rocket.

So… What Now?

To be fair, Katy Perry didn’t ask to become the face of fake feminism. But she leaned all the way into it — with the glitz, the screams, and the influencer energy. And when your career has been one long rollercoaster of trying to stay cool… it’s not a good look.

She’ll bounce back. She always does.

But maybe next time… don’t try to rebrand as a feminist icon from orbit.

Katy Perry is a name that was once synonymous with massive chart-topping hits. For a good portion of her career, she delivered bangers that had everyone singing along.

However, in the past few years, her decline has been witnessed by many fans. She no longer carries the same charisma she once had, and it’s painfully obvious in her recent singles and the music she’s shared with the world.

This article takes a look at her career’s falloff and why it seems like she’s struggling to maintain her once-iconic status.

A Change in Sound

In her latest releases, Perry’s sound feels like a stark departure from her earlier work. Instead of the powerful pop anthems we all loved, her new music feels disconnected. Some of her recent singles, like “Women’s World,” seem to lack the punch and creativity that fans were used to.

It’s been criticized as feeling bland and generic, like it could’ve been generated by AI rather than crafted by an artist with Perry’s experience. This could be due to her trying to tap into new trends, like hyperpop, but without fully embracing the distorted, experimental sound that artists like Arca have mastered.

Struggling to Connect

Another song that left fans unimpressed is “Lifetimes,” which similarly lacks the excitement and spark that once made Katy’s music irresistible. At this point, it’s hard to deny that her recent tracks just don’t live up to her earlier hits. She may still have loyal fans, but even they are noticing the shift in quality.

Despite these underwhelming releases, Perry was recently presented with the VMAs Video Vanguard Award, an honor that recognizes an artist’s contribution to music videos and pop culture.

However, the timing of this award seemed strategic, as it came just before her upcoming album release. While the award is meant to celebrate her past achievements, it raises questions about whether Perry can still make an impact in today’s music scene.

The Verdict

At this stage, it’s safe to say that Katy Perry is struggling to keep up with the new trends in pop music. With newer artists embracing the chaotic, innovative sounds of hyperpop, Perry’s attempts to stay relevant feel a bit out of touch.

While she may still have a platform and loyal fanbase, the general consensus is that her music no longer holds the same excitement as it once did. As she gears up to release her new album, many are left wondering if she can reinvent herself once again or if her falloff is here to stay.

Katy Perry’s “Roar” is expected to dominate over Lady Gaga’s “Applause” in the opening week of the pop singles. Fans of Perry have pushed her to more to an expected 525,000 downloads.

If Perry hits her expected sales, it will be the biggest yet since “Fireworks” made it to 509,000 downloads in its opening. Lady Gaga sales are estimated at 200,000 to 225,000 reports Billboard for her single “Applause”. Has the singer’s absence effect her little monsters? Gaga even released the track early in what she called a “pop music emergency”. The singer had to take a small hiatus due to a hip injury. “Applause” is the first single off of her upcoming ARTPOP.

I’m sure that Katy Perry and Lady Gaga weren’t planning on going head to head, but now that both of their singles have popped up online, many are wondering which pop queen will take the crown.

Lady Gaga’s last studio album, Born This Way, came out in 2011 and was led by the single of the same name. The song debuted at number on on the Digital Songs chart with 448,000 downloads in three days. Perry’s Teenage Dream from 2010 was led by the single “California Girls” featuring Snoop Dogg. The single had 294,000 downloads and debuted at number one.

Katy Perry’s Prism hits shelves on October 22, while Gaga’s ARTPOP drops on November 11.

Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen joined the ranks of illustrious honorees at the Billboard’s Women in Music 2012 Luncheon.

“I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women,” stated Katy Perry during her “Woman of the Year” acceptance speech. “I don’t really like to call myself a role model for my fans. I hope that I am an inspiration for them, especially young women. My mantra, especially for the film was: If you believe in yourself, you can be anything.”

The luncheon was hosted at the Capitale which honored many rising stars such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Atlantic’s Julie Greenwald, Billboard’s reigning No. 1 female music executive for the past three years. However, the number of women in the business roles are dwindling. “As we all sit here today, over half of the college graduates are female but less thant one fifth of the executives in businesses of of the Fortune 500 and above are female,” stated Global Media’s CEO Dottie Mattison.

Perry and Jepsen join the ranks of the likes as Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce by being honored by Billboard. In accepting her rising star award, Jepsen thanked Brenda Romano, Intersopes’ president of promotion and Billboard’s No. 9 most powerful woman in music, as well as fellow Interscope execs. Jepsen stated that the most influential women in her life have been her mother and stepmother, to whom she dedicated the award.

Katy Perry, also thanked her mom and sister for being her inspirations in life.
