Fans of “Angry Birds” can’t seem to put their phones down when it comes to playing the game, but now they might have a reason to give the game a rest. Sony Pictures Entertainment came out and announced that they’ve won the distribution rights to the movie version of the game, which is set to be released on July 1, 2016.
The demand for the game is definitely still there, with “Angry Birds” reporting nearly 2 billion downloads as of March, 2013. As of right now there’s no specific plot details that the studio is willing to share, other than the fact that it will be in 3D. The “Angry Birds” movie will be produced by John Cohen (“Despicable Me”) and David Maisel (“Iron Man,” “Thor”), and will expand on the current Finnish TV series “Angry Birds Toons,” which debuted in March.
“Every studio in town would love to add ‘Angry Birds’ to their slate. There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table,” Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Amy Pascal, co-chair, said in a statement.
