The Amazing Spider Man is going in a different direction and that means bad news for actress Shailene Woodley. Woodley, set to play Mary Jane, won’t be appearing in the upcoming Spider Man film due to a plot change by director Marc Webb.
“I made a creative decision to streamline the story to focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” said Marc Webb in a statement on Deadline. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
Shailene says she’s “bummed” about the decision, but understands it’s all apart of the game. “I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn’t trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film.”
Despite dropping Woodley, the film is still jammed pack with A-list names including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Sally Field, Paul Giamati, Chris Cooper, and more. It is unsure if Woodley will be seen in the 3rd and 4th installments of the Amazing Spider Man.
The Amazing Spider Man 2 is set to premiere the summer of 2014.
