Fiona Apple cancels tour to spend time with dying dog

Songstress Fiona Apple announced today that she will be cancelling her upcoming tour to spend time with her ailing dog Janet.

Apple posted a letter on her Facebook page today to talk about her 14 year-old pit bull, calling her “my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor… the one who taught me what love is.”

Janet is suffering from a chest tumor, as well as a rare endocrine disorder called Addison’s disease. Apple adopted the dog as a four month old puppy when she was 21. She went on to explain that the dog has been “the most consistent relationship of my adult life.”

“If I go away again, I’m afraid she’ll die and I won’t have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out. Sometimes it takes me 20 minutes to pick out which socks to wear to bed. But this decision was instant. I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship…I just can’t leave her now, please understand,” Apple concluded.
