According to the Wall Street Journal the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the organization that oversees Warhol’s estate, has decided to sell off the remainder of the pop icon’s work at an upcoming Christie’s auction. The estate currently has 20,000 pieces by the artist and according to estimates could bring in a $100 million fortune. The collection which includes drawings, prints, collages, silk screens and photographs will go up at Christie’s New York showroom in November of this year. The foundation says that they have decided to change their focus and that is why the pieces are headed to auction. By selling off the collection it can cut the costs required to insure and store the pieces and use that money towards philanthropic pursuits. The foundation has already donated $250 million over the years to cultural causes and donated 4,000 of its top pieces to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, where the artist was born.
