August 9 marks the 50th birthday of the late singer, Whitney Houston. The legendary artist was born in Newark, New Jersey and rose to become one of the greatest singers of all time. Sadly, her personal life  overshadowed her talent in thelatter years of the singer’s life and she died at the age of 48 in 2012.

Whitney Houston is one of the most celebrated singers for her singles such as “I Will Always Love You”, “Saving All My Love”, and “How Will I Know”. She also did quite a few movies including Waiting to Exhale alongside Angela Bassett and The Preacher’s Wife.

Shortly after her death, Whitney’s brother Michael revealed to Oprah that he was the first to introduce the singer to drugs citing that it was the 80’s and everyone was doing it. This cleared the name of her estranged husband Bobby Brown, who was often criticized for the downfall of Whitney Houston due to her drug use.

Nonetheless, Whitney will always be known for her tremendous voice and stellar music that had many opened mouthed once she began singing. Instead of focusing on the negative, today fans celebrate the life of Whitney Houston by listening to her music, watching her films, and sharing memories of the late singer.

Happy Birthday, Whitney.
