Twentieth Century Fox announced on Thursday that Independence Day 2 was in the works. The sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 3, 2015. 19 years after the first film’s official release.
The original film, starring Will Smith, was about an alien attack on the United States with plans to take over the planet, ironically around the time for Independence Day.
“We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honor the first one. The first one gave us all careers and we really love that movie and loved the experience,” said the original Independence Day co-screenwriter Dean Delvin last year. “I feel like we got it. I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, ‘That’s worth seeing as a sequel to ‘Independence Day.”’
It is unsure if the sequel will include Will Smith, who just recently starred in After Earth alongside his son Jaden. Roland Emmerich will return to direct the sequel. He is currently making press rounds for the upcoming “White House Down”, which means he may give out some details on Independence Day 2 as well.
July 3, 2015 is already packed with some big movie sequels including “Marvel’s Avengers 2”, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5”, and “Jurassic Park 4”.
