The highly anticipated film Fifty Shades of Grey has locked in a director. It has been in the talks for years to adapt the E.L James bestseller to film and it’s finally moving in that direction. Universal Pictures and Focus Features have confirmed that director Sam Taylor-Johnson will help adapt the first book of the trilogy to film.
“I am excited to be charged with the evolution of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ from page to screen,” said Taylor-Johnson in a statement. “For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”
Taylor-Wood is best known for her film Nowhere Boy, but has also worked on several short films throughout her career. She beats out a plethora of who’s who directors for the gig. Director Joe Wright, best known for Anna Karenina, and even Angelina Jolie were rumored to be up for grabs to direct the film about the relationship between 27-year-old billionaire, Christian Grey, and college graduate, Anastasia Steele. The film, like the movie, will chronicle their sexual relationship that had many not wanting to put the book down.
“Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life,” said producer Michael De Luca. “E.L James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit.”
Now, if only they can confirm the actors to play Christian and Anastasia.
