Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill covers the June/July issue of Details and shares that he wasn’t always the hunk that he is.

Cavill revealed to the magazine that he used to struggle with his weight as a kid. “I was fat,” he said. “I was Fat Cavill.” He got into shape after landing his first role at the age of 17 in the film The Count of Monte Cristo. “I lost one and a half stone (21 lbs) and I wasn’t Fat Cavill anymore,” said the actor. He had to bulk up to take on the role of Superman in Man of Steel. He told the magazine that he packed on the pounds by consuming 5,000 calories a day.

Cavill shared his experience of  finding out he landed the role with Details. “When I found out I got the part, I was home playing World of Warcraft,” said the actor. He stated that he didn’t think he was going to get the part and assumed the call was to be “let down easy”.  He added, “then it dawned on me that he was giving me the part. I had to play it cool. Be appreciative, respectful, professional.” Cavill said he definitely could not hide the excitement. “I just sprinted up and down my stairs cheering and whooping like a madman. I kept looking in the mirror, going, ‘I don’t believe it. I’m Superman? I’m Superman!”

Man of Steel hits theaters on June 14.
