Despite the competition from films such as Les Miserables and Django Unchained, Texas Chainsaw 3D came on top over the weekend as the number one movie in America. The film, the latest spun from the early 70’s horror classic about a chainsaw-wielding maniac Leatherface, racked up $23 million at the box office.

Texas Chainsaw 3D only scored a C+ on the CinemaScore and opened stronger than the 2006 prequel “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning”. Jessica Biel starred in a remake three years before that eventually made $80.6 million after opening with $28.1 million. Alexandria Daddario and Tania Raymonde star in Texas Chainsaw 3D, which is about about a girl who heads to Texas to pick up an inheritance. Trey Songz makes an appearance in the film and could explain the surprising opening numbers. One in three people under 25 who saw the movie said they came to watch the singer onscreen.

Quentin Tarantiino’s Django Unchained was number two with $20.8 million, which totals the film’s 13 day earnings to $106.4 million. “The Hobbit” landed the third spot with $17.5 million, collecting a total of $263.8 million domestically and $561 million overseas. Les Miserables was number four with a domestic earning of $16 million and total of $103.6 million. The film, starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman has been at the forefront of Oscar talks.
