The outer space thriller Gravity made history in its opening week. The film, which starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, find the astronauts stuck in space. Think Castaway, but in space. It landed the top spot in the box-office this week, crushing it’s competition.

Gravity earned $55.6 million topping the previous record held by Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011 with earnings of $52.6 million. The major score of Gravity made it hard for other films to keep up. Runner Runner, which starred Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, brought in only 15% of what Gravity pulled in this opening wee. The film came in at third with an earning of $7.9 million domestically. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 landed the second spot with an earning of $21.5 million.

The Hugh Jackman Prisoners took the fourth spot with an earning of $5.7 million, while Rush, which starred Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde and directed by Ron Howard, took on fifth with $4.5 million. The low budget Don Jon took on $4.2 million. Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and starred in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson.

The late James Gandolfini stars in Enough Said that wraps up the top ten. He starred alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the romantic comedy, in the first post-death film. In its limited release, the film earned $2.1 million.
