The lovable character actor and star of “McHale’s Navy” passes away Sunday at Los Angeles’ Cedar-Sinai Medical Center. At 95, Ernest Borgnine was the oldest living Oscar winner and while his career as a leading man may have been brief he worked consistently in TV and film all they up to almost the end. Borgnine one the Oscar for his memorable role in “Marty” but throughout his career he appeared in over 200 films including “The Dirty Dozen,” “bad Day at Black Rock,” and “From Here to Eternity.” Later in his career he provided voice talents to animated pieces like “All Dogs Go to Heaven” and “Sponge Bob Square Pants.” Borgnine was married 5 times and he is survived by the 5th Tova Newman as well as two daughters, a son, a stepson, six grandchildren and his sister Evelyn.
