Ke$ha’s hit song “Die Young” has been pulled out of rotation at radio stations around the country in the wake of the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut last week and on Tuesday the pop star issued a statement apologizing for the now controversial lyrics. In the apology Ke$ha explained that she was “forced” to sing the lyrics but later deleted the post and apologized again and explained that she understood that the song was inappropriate. Today the singer took to her website to backtrack on her earlier claims and explain that no one forced her to sing “Die Young.”
“After such a tragic event I was feeling a lot of emotion and sadness when I said I was forced to sing some of the lyrics to Die Young. Forced is not the right word. I did have some concerns about the phrase “die young” in the chorus when we were writing the lyrics especially because so many of my fans are young and that’s one reason why I wrote so many versions of this song. But the point of the song is the importance of living every day to the fullest and staying young at heart, and these are things I truly believe, “ she said.

Since last week’s’ tragic shooting at a school in Newtown connecticut many televisions stations, movie producers and now radio stations are re-evaluating what they decide to air and when. Since Friday’s shooting that claimed the lives of twenty young children many radio stations have decided to pull Ke$ha’s new hit song “Die Young” according to Billboard magazine. The song, which had been at No. 3 on the Hot 10, is about seizing the moment but features a line about living “like we’re gonna die young.”
The singer understands that the lyrics could be seen as insensitive in light of the tragedy taking to Twitter to say: “I understand. I had my very own issue with ‘die young’ for this reason. I did NOT want to sing those lyrics and I was FORCED TO. I’m so sorry for anyone who has been effected by this tragedy and I understand why my song is now inappropriate. words cannot express.”

According to TMZ, Ke$ha’s hit “Die Young” has fallen from airwaves after the Sandy Hook shooting in Newton, Ct. Radio stations across the country have nixed the song from their rotations after the tragedy.

“Die Young” was at the number three spot on the radio playlists on Friday, the day of the shooting, reaching over 167 million listeners nationwide according to Mediabase. On Saturday, the airplay of the song dropped by 3 million listeners. By Monday, “Die Young” had fallen 148 million listeners and has been dropping ever since. A drop like this is extremely rare. The last time this harsh drop has happened was when the Dixie Chicks were banned from country radio after speaking out against former President George Bush.

It’s understandable that the Ke$ha track will be cut from stations after the tragedy of Sandy Hook. The sensitivity level of the nation has increased with the sadness brought on by the deaths of 20 small children. Shows have been postponed and cancelled due to the issue and the song doesn’t seem to be an exception.

“Die Young” can be heard on Ke$ha’s album Warrior.
