The discovery channel is debunking rumors this week that there will be future episodes of Ted Nugents ‘Gun Country.’ The network said that despite what Nugent has been telling the press, ‘Gun Country’ was a one-time event and there will be no new episodes.
The special, which featured Ted Nugent and his artillery of guns aired back in October and since then Nugent has been saying: “They want to do it as a regular feature. We expect that there will be at least a dozen shows a year.”
While Nugent defends his gun use saying, “Our new show…simply celebrates and promotes the self-evident truth that 99.9% of American gun-owning families use our guns on a regular basis for all the reasons. The same 99.9% of Americans with guns will never use our guns in a crime or for any negative misuse whatsoever,” many networks are rethinking their programming in light of the recent massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

Discovery Channel confirmed on Monday that the reality show American Guns is cancelled. The show, about a Colorado family in the gun business, will no longer be on the Discovery Channel due the network not wanting to be linked with the Sandy Hook shooting.

“American Guns concluded earlier this year,” the network said in a statement. “Discovery Channel chose not to renew the series and has no plans to air repeats of the show” The network, however, did not state whether the decision was linked to the Sandy Hook shooting in Newton, Ct, which brought gun violence and gun control to the forefront of the national conversation.

Tweeters had mixed reactions to Discovery’s decision to cancel the show. Some viewer’s applauded the network’s decision, while others were disappointed in the show’s cancellation.

On Saturday, Paige Wyatt, star of the series, posted on her Facebook page a screen shot of a tweet sent to her on Sautrday saying “@PaigeWyatt Sickening to zap into American Guns right after the #Newton shooting. Are you aware that you are encouraging this culture?”. Wyatt responded by saying the guy “needs to be educated.”

Similarly, Syfy didn’t air Friday’s planned episode of Haven featuring violence at a high school and TLC postponed the premiere of Best Funeral Ever to January 6th.  Fox also yanked Family Guy and American Dad from its schedule on Sunday night.

“American Chopper” has been a reality television staple for ten years but the Teutul family will be saying goodbye this season as Discovery has decided to cancel the long-running program.

“After 10 years and 233 episodes of incredible, riveting reality television, American Chopper will be ending its run. This series was one of the very first family-based reality programs on television.” Discovery told EW today. The show follows the Teutul family and their custom motorcycle shop and has gained much of its following from the drama provided by the tension between Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. that resulted, for several seasons, into two rival motorcycle shops. Father and son have since reunited and the show has focused primarily this season on the two reconciling their differences. The series will end with a live special in which rival bike builders like Jesse James will compete against the Teutals in Las Vegas, it is slated to air on December 11^th.
