Chris Kelly, one half of the rap duo Kris Kross, was found unresponsive at his Atlanta home and died at an area hospital shortly after. Authorities were planning to conduct an autopsy on Thursday on the rapper to determine the cause of death.

“It appears it may have been a possible drug overdose,” said Captain Kay Lester, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County police. Lester’s comments come based on statements received at the scene as well as evidence. Police were called to Kelly’s home in south Atlanta around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He was transported to the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center. Kelly was pronounced dead at the hospital around 5 p.m, said Betty Honey of the Fulton’s County Medical Examiner’s office.

There is yet to be a confirmed cause of death, despite the apparent drug use. A friend of the rapper told police that Kelly had been taking a mixture of heroin and cocaine on Tuesday evening. An autopsy found no signs of foul play or trauma, said the examiner. Results from a toxicology report is available in three to four weeks. Kelly has had a history of drug abuse, said his uncle to the police.

Kris Kross is best known for the extremely popular single “Jump”, which topped the mainstream U.S music charts in 1992, when Kelly and partner Chris Smith were only 13 years old. The duo wasn’t able to top the track and released their third and final studio album, “Young, Rich & Dangerous” in 1996.

Chris Kelly — one half of the music duo Kris Kross — has died at age 34.

Chris Kelly, aka “Mac Daddy” of ’90s hip hop duo Kris Kross, was found dead in his Atlanta home late yesterday (May 1st.) According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kelly was found unresponsive and then taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

In the early 1990s, Kelly and Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith became a pop sensation on the heels of their debut single “Jump,” and their distinctive backwards clothing. The two teenagers’ multiplatinum debut album was produced by a young Jermaine Dupri, catapulting all of them to stardom.

“A spokeswoman with the Fulton County Police Department said unless the medical examiner finds out something different, it appears Kelly died of a drug overdose,” reports CBS Atlanta.

Kelly, along with Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith, was discovered as a young teen by Jermaine Dupri. Kris Kross reunited to perform at Dupri’s So So Def 20th anniversary all-star concert in Atlanta earlier this year.

The rap duo quickly became famous for wearing their clothes backwards and shot to super stardom in the ’90s with the group’s number one Billboard hit, “Jump.”
