The outer space thriller Gravity made history in its opening week. The film, which starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, find the astronauts stuck in space. Think Castaway, but in space. It landed the top spot in the box-office this week, crushing it’s competition.

Gravity earned $55.6 million topping the previous record held by Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011 with earnings of $52.6 million. The major score of Gravity made it hard for other films to keep up. Runner Runner, which starred Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, brought in only 15% of what Gravity pulled in this opening wee. The film came in at third with an earning of $7.9 million domestically. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 landed the second spot with an earning of $21.5 million.

The Hugh Jackman Prisoners took the fourth spot with an earning of $5.7 million, while Rush, which starred Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde and directed by Ron Howard, took on fifth with $4.5 million. The low budget Don Jon took on $4.2 million. Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and starred in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson.

The late James Gandolfini stars in Enough Said that wraps up the top ten. He starred alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the romantic comedy, in the first post-death film. In its limited release, the film earned $2.1 million.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey dominated the box office this weekend breaking December opening records and bringing in $84.7 million in sales.
The Hobbit, the first release in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” prequel trilogy, was the #1 film in the country this weekend as it took over the record as highest grossing December release from 2007’s “I am Legend.”
Fans began lining up Thursday night for midnight screening around the country, which earned about $13 million. The movie took in $37.5 million on Friday and $28.15 on Saturday with as much as 49% of the revenue coming from higher priced 3D and IMAX screenings.
The Hobbit is not receiving the same critical attention as the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy but the lackluster reviews do not seem to be deterring fans. The second part of the trilogy “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is set to be released sometime in 2013 with the final installment of the trilogy to follow in 2014.

It’s been 50 years since James Bond first took to the big screen and if the latest box-office numbers are to be believed the spy is more popular than ever. ‘Skyfall’ marks the 23rd installment in the Bond film series and over the weekend it took in $90 million making it the biggest box-office opening in James Bond history. $87.8 million was generated in regular showings and another $2.2 million from IMAX and large format theater previews, according to Box Office Mojo.

The last film released, “Quantum of Solace,” was the previous opening weekend record holder, grossing an initial $67.5 million. 2006’s “Casino Royale” remains the highest overall grossing film; $594 million in worldwide ticket sales. The original Bond film, “Dr. No,” brought in $59.6 million back in 1962, with inflation that would be about $457 million today.

Also doing well over the weekend were new releases “wreck-It Ralph” and “Flight” which took in $33.1 million and $15.1 million respectively.
