Back in 1969 Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger wrote a series of love letters to his lover Marsha Hunt. The previously unseen letters sold at auction this week for just over $300,000, twice as much as the expected price.
Hunt, who is reportedly the inspiration for the Stones classic Brown Sugar, gave the letters to Sotheby’s to sell for her along with the statement, “When a serious historian finally examines how and why Britain’s boy bands affected international culture and politics, this well-preserved collection of Mick Jagger’s handwritten letters will be a revelation.”
The letters reportedly touch on everything from Jagger’s views on the moon landing to gossip about John Lennon and Yoko Ono and according to book specialist Gabriel Heaton reveal a very different side of Jagger from his flamboyant public persona. “The letters reveal a poetic and self-aware 25 year-old with wide ranging intellectual and artistic interests,” he said.

A rare studio demo recorded by the Beatles back in 1962 is heading to auction and expected to bring in some serious cash. The demo was recorded on New Year’s Day by the band under the name “The Silver Beatles” and was used in an attempt to get a deal with Decca Records. The ten track album failed to secure a contract but the master was kept by the studio until now. Over the years, several bootlegs of the set have been leaked but this is the first time that the master has been made available and according to the auction house, is of much higher quality than any of the previously circulated copies.

The auction is being run by the Fame Bureau with bidding set to start somewhere around $30,000. Regardless who buys the master recording it is unlikely that it will be reproduced as the Beatles still hold the copyright to the material on the tape.

According to the Wall Street Journal the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the organization that oversees Warhol’s estate, has decided to sell off the remainder of the pop icon’s work at an upcoming Christie’s auction. The estate currently has 20,000 pieces by the artist and according to estimates could bring in a $100 million fortune. The collection which includes drawings, prints, collages, silk screens and photographs will go up at Christie’s New York showroom in November of this year. The foundation says that they have decided to change their focus and that is why the pieces are headed to auction. By selling off the collection it can cut the costs required to insure and store the pieces and use that money towards philanthropic pursuits. The foundation has already donated $250 million over the years to cultural causes and donated 4,000 of its top pieces to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, where the artist was born.

Bettie Page, the queen of pin-ups, is one of the world’s most famous and recognizable pin-up girls and next year one of the world’s largest collections of her images will be headed to auction. Movie Star News, a store located in Manhattan’s lower east side, has collected millions of posters, film stills and negatives over the years and this week they have closed shop packed it all up and sold their entire inventory to a collectibles company in Las Vegas.

According to Stuart Scheinman, owner of the company that bought the collection: “this is the most important archive of Hollywood in existence. There are tens of thousands of negatives that have never been reproduced.” The collection represents over 5,000 actors and 11,500 movies filmed between 1939 and 1979. Aside from the Bettie Page collection actors such as Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Gary Cooper and Bette Davis are also represented.
