Angel Batista

Angel Batista is one of the investigators and detectives assigned to many cases at Miami Metro Police Department on the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  He works very closely with María LaGuerta and is a close friend of Dexter Morgan, Vince Masuka, and Debra Morgan to name a few.

Batista is a Detective in Miami Metro Police Department’s Homicide Division. He works closely with Dexter Morgan during cases, often teaming up with him for his expert advice on serial killers, and considers himself Dexter’s best friend. Batista, while unable to share Dexter’s fascination with blood, appreciates the art of murder. In the novel series, Batista is not a detective, but a forensicofficer who works alongside Dexter. He is also referred by himself and others as “Angel no-relation” in reference to former Cubandictator Fulgencio Batista.

Angel is a friendly, good natured character who provides a sense of humanity and compassion in Dexter’s life. While he is prone to making rash decisions and acting on emotion, he does not harbor any resentment for even the worst fate hands to him and is shown to care deeply for those who work around him. He is also well known for his trademark fedora hat which he is almost never seen without.

Joey Quinn

Joey Quinn is one of the guys at Miami Metro Police’s homicide division and has a huge role in the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  At one point he and Dexter Morgan seem to be enemies when he is dating Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, but eventually comes around to being a pretty cool guy.

Quinn was originally a Narcotics cop. During his time in Narcotics, Quinn helped Anton Briggs out of a drug bust in exchange for making him his personal confidential informant while paying his dues out of his own money (while lying that Anton was officially an informant with time left to get off scot-free). Quinn at one point inherited his uncle’s house as well as a new car that came with it.

He tends to have a generally extroverted and outgoing personality, but at times when under stress or insulted, he can become extremely angry and tends to lash out at the people around him. He has a habit of constantly swearing, and also is not afraid to speak his mind whenever he feels he should.

Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan, portrayed by actor James Remar is a pivotal character and narrator of the hit television show Dexter on HBO.  He is Dexter’s  father and the main reason for why Dexter Morgan ‘is the way he is’.   He is also what Dexter refers to as his dark passenger, seeing that Harry Morgan always seems to be playing a role in Dexter’s life and mind.

Harry Morgan is a detective and highly-respected member of the Miami Police Department, and a close friend of his immediate superior Lieutenant Tom Matthews. In the course of a high-stakes drug case, Harry begins an illicit relationship with Laura Moser, Dexter’s biological mother, to gather information and evidence on the drug lords in question. The drug dealers eventually find out she is informing on them, and make an example of her; they brutally murder her and three others with chainsaws in a shipping container. Her sons Brian and Dexter are left in the container for several days, sitting in two inches of blood, until Harry and a police team rescue them. Harry adopts Dexter, while Brian is sent into foster care; Harry believes that the older Brian is permanently traumatizedby the event and is “unsalvageable”, but that Dexter is still young enough to be “saved”. Eventually, however, Harry realizes that the experience turned Dexter into a violent sociopath. (Unbeknownst to him, the same fate had befallen Brian, who also grows up to become a serial killer.)

James Doakes

James Doakes is one of the main characters early on in the hit HBO television series Dexter.  He is portrayed by actor Erik King and is one of the most important characters of the whole show…

Doakes enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to become an Army Ranger, serving with the elite Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment.^[1] After spending many years in black operations, Doakes gave up his military career, electing instead to use his skills to help innocent civilians. Doakes’s police career grinds to a halt when he receives excessive force citations and proves he cannot work well with others (unless leading them). Doakes had a relationship with LaGuerta, whom he made a point of listening to, and was partners with her, but their partnership ended when LaGuerta arrested a high-profile drug dealer in a drug bust and got promoted.

Rita (Bennett) Morgan

Rita Bennett (then later on Rita Morgan) is Dexter’s girlfriend and eventual wife, who plays a vital role in the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  She is portrayed by actress Julie Benz, and is a loving and warm character on the show.

Rita often plays the role of a concerned mother who comes from a damaged relationship and, like Debra Morgan, she has her own story-line which progresses along with the main course of the plot. While she tended in the first season to be naively unaware of Dexter’s flaws, a complicated situation involving Lila West, after which she and Dexter grew apart and eventually reconnected, changed the fundamental nature of their relationship; where she had previously paid his long absences and flimsy cover stories no mind, Rita began to pick up on Dexter’s lies and occasionally questioned his erratic behavior. Ultimately, however, Dexter’s attachment to Rita and Rita’s devotion to Dexter continued to grow throughout their relationship and eventual marriage.

Vincent “Vince”  Masuka

Vincent Masuka, commonly referred to as Vince or simply Masuka is the lead forensics investigator on the hit television show Dexter on HBO.  He aids Dexter Morgan in bringing criminals to justice, while also keeping everyone on their toes.  He often tells jokes and is a prankster, so you get it straight forward with Vince.  He is portrayed by actor C.S. Lee, and is really dynamic.

Masuka is the Miami Metro Police lead forensics investigator and works alongside Dexter Morgan in the lab and in crime scenes. He often cracks innuendos to the rest of the team, invokes his Japanese heritage only when convenient, and harbors decidedly unrequited feelings for Debra.

He is portrayed as obsessed with sex—the kinkier the better—and is not shy about propositioning every woman he meets. However, he has been able to tone it down when the situation calls for it, like when Angel was in the hospital, as well as calming Debra down when Lundy returned. Detective Joey Quinn even confronted him about that in stating that is the reason no one likes to be around him, only for Vince to harshly brush him off. However, he seems to accept Joey’s explanation when no one came to see his speech on his newly published work, for which he cleaned up his act and dressed formally. At Debra`s request, he returned to his old self at the end of the episode, though his demeanor remains less vulgar.

María LaGuerta

María LaGuerta is one of the main characters and re-occurring roles on the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  She plays a variety of roles in the homicide sector of the Miami Metro Police Department and does a great job of solving cases.  She is played by actress Lauren Vélez, and gives the audience the harsh truth with an elegant and eager attitude.

Lt. Maria Laguerta is in charge of the Miami Police Department. She’s the boss of Dexter, Debra and the entire crew.

Laguerta was initially relieved of her post in the first season, but plotted to take it back from the new boss by sleeping with her fiance. Indeed, Maria isn’t afraid to get dirty in this business.

She had a romantic history with Sergeant Doakes, which was revealed in season two; and with attorney Miguel Prado, which is revealed in season three. Laguerta seems like a solid Lieutenant, treating her charges fairly.

Debra Morgan

Jennifer Carpenter plays the very important role of Debra Morgan on the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  Debra is a reserved yet outspoken individual who finds comfort in her one and only brother Dexter.  She is a force to be reckoned with in uniform but an emotional wreck outside of work with her personal life.

Debra was born to Doris Morgan and Harry Morgan and later became foster sister to Dexter Morgan. A tough, foul-mouthed tomboy, she craved her father’s attention, and envied Dexter for all the time that Harry spent with him — unaware that Harry was teaching him how to get away with murder.

When she was 16, her mother died of cancer. From then on, she wanted to become a detective like her father, and started learning to shoot a gun by taking her father’s. Dexter found out and told Harry, who punished her. Hurt, Debra told Dexter that she wished that Harry had never brought him home; she was immediately remorseful for saying it, however, and apologized.

She was distraught at her father’s death and, inspired by his legendary police career, she followed in his footsteps and joined the police and yearned desperately to become a Homicide Detective. She spent three years in patrol and then another two years in vice before being promoted by Captain Tom Matthews (a friend of her father), becoming a Homicide officer at the start of the first season.

Dexter Morgan

Dexter Morgan is the main character and narrator of the hit television series Dexter on HBO.  He is a vigilante, a father, and a hard working blood spatter expert at Miami Metro Police Department.

Dexter was born on February 1, 1971.  At the story’s outset, Dexter knows very little about his life prior to being adopted by Harry Morgan (a Miami detective), and his wife Doris. Harry only tells Dexter that his parents were killed in a car accident. When Dexter is seven, Harry discovers that the boy has been killing neighborhood pets. Harry realizes that Dexter is a sociopath with an innate need to kill, and decided to channel the boy’s homicidal urges in a “positive” direction by teaching him to be a careful, meticulous killer of people who “deserve it”—murderers who had escaped justice. Doris died when Dexter was 16, and Harry died when Dexter was 20.
